Incheon Airport to Seoul: four ways in, and which one is yours

There are four ways from Incheon Airport to Seoul, and every guide ranks them by price. Price is the wrong first question. Where you are sleeping tonight is the right one, and it eliminates two of the four before you compare a single number.

Answer this first: where are you sleeping tonight?

Everything follows from that.

Which way into Seoul, by where you are sleepingFour rows. Where you are staying tonight decides the mode. Near Seoul Station takes the express train. Hongdae, Gongdeok or Digital Media City take the all-stop train. Gangnam, Jamsil, Dongdaemun or Myeongdong take the limousine bus, because the trains leave you a transfer away with your luggage. Landing after midnight means a taxi, because the trains and buses have stopped.Price is the wrong first question. A cheap train plus two transferswith suitcases is not cheaper in the day it costs you.
Answer the question above and two of the four disappear before you compare a single fare.Scroll the chart sideways for the rest.

The distance, since people ask: the airport sits about 64 km from central Seoul - the AREX rail line measures 63.8 km from Seoul Station to Terminal 2. That number matters less than it looks, because every option below is one ride with no changes; what varies is where the ride ends and how far you then drag a suitcase.

The trains are cheaper. That is not in dispute. But a 4,750 KRW train followed by two subway transfers and a fifteen-minute walk with two suitcases is not cheaper than a 15,000-17,000 KRW bus that stops outside your hotel. It is only cheaper on the receipt.

The four options, with real numbers

AREX express train

13,000 KRW (about $9.69), nonstop to Seoul Station. 43 minutes from Terminal 1, 51 minutes from Terminal 2.

Reserved seats, luggage space, and the timing does not move regardless of traffic or weather. If your accommodation is anywhere the Seoul Station area serves, this is simply the right answer and the comparison is over.

One thing worth knowing for the trip home: buy an express ticket and you can check your bags and clear departure formalities at the Seoul Station city airport terminal before you board, then walk into the airport with nothing. This depends on your airline and destination, so check before you count on it.

AREX all-stop train

4,750 KRW (about $3.54) to Seoul Station, 59 minutes. Terminal 2 is a little more and a little longer.

Fourteen stations, eight of them transfer points. This is the one to take if you are staying near Hongdae, Gongdeok or Digital Media City, because it goes directly there and you skip Seoul Station entirely. Your T-money card works on it, so there is no ticket to buy.

Airport limousine bus

15,000-17,000 KRW, depending on the route. Paying with a transport card saves a thousand won on some services.

The bus is slower and traffic is real. What you get for that is a seat, a hold for your bags, and a stop that is often outside or near your hotel. For Gangnam, Jamsil and the eastern half of the city this is not a compromise, it is the correct choice. Buy at the counter in the arrivals hall or at the stop.

Taxi

Incheon to the Gangnam side of the river is a fixed 90,000 KRW (about $67) on a standard taxi, not a meter fare. Other districts have their own fixed prices, from around 70,000 won for the near western side up to 95,000 won for the far east.

Because it is a published fixed rate, there is nothing to negotiate and no meter to watch. Tolls are separate. Between 22:00 and 04:00 a night surcharge applies.

Late arrival is the case where the taxi stops being extravagant and starts being the only option. Trains and buses thin out and then stop. If you land after midnight, decide before you fly whether you are taking a taxi or waiting in the terminal until the first train.

Door to door, for the three places most people are heading

The table above sorts by mode. This sorts by where you are going, because that is the question you actually have. Three destinations, three different answers - which is the point: there is no single best way in.

Hongdae — take the all-stop train, 4,750 KRW. It stops at Hongik University Station and you are there. No transfer, no bus, and it is the cheapest option on this page by a wide margin. If you are staying in Hongdae, Gongdeok or Digital Media City, this is not a compromise; it is simply the right answer, and the express train would be a slower and dearer way to arrive at the wrong station.

Myeongdong — take the express train and two stops on line 4. The express runs to Seoul Station in 43 minutes for 13,000 KRW, and Myeongdong is two stops further on line 4, about five minutes, for 1,550 KRW. That is about 14,550 won all in. The limousine bus at 15,000-17,000 KRW costs slightly more and drops closer to the hotels, so it wins if you are carrying two large cases and loses if the road is busy. Either is defensible. What is not defensible is a taxi, at four to six times the price for a route the train does well.

Gangnam — take the limousine bus, 15,000-17,000 KRW. Both trains leave you north of the river with a transfer and your luggage still in your hands, and the transfer is the part that costs you. The bus goes over the bridge and stops on the main roads near the hotels. If there are three of you and it is late, the fixed taxi fare of 90,000 KRW (about $67) divided three ways stops looking absurd.

Notice what the three have in common: in every case the cheapest ticket and the best answer are different questions, and in two of the three the winner is decided by luggage rather than by price.

What the price comparison misses

Your luggage is the hidden variable. Every transfer between subway lines in Seoul means stairs somewhere, and not every station has a lift on the route you need. Two large cases turn a cheap train into an expensive hour.

Terminal 2 is a real distance from Terminal 1. They are separate buildings with their own stations and bus stops. Check which one you are landing at, because a shuttle between them costs you twenty minutes you did not budget.

The trains do not run all night. Neither do most buses. This is the single most common way an arrival plan falls apart.

Buying a transport card at the airport

If you are taking the all-stop train, you need a card or a ticket anyway, and the arrivals hall convenience stores sell T-money cards. Worth doing there rather than later, because you will want it for every bus and subway after this one.

The card and a SIM are the two things that are easier at the airport than in the city; the first two hours guide puts them in order. The card itself costs 3,000-5,000 KRW and is not refundable. The balance you load onto it is, minus a 500 KRW fee, and there is a separate guide to getting that back before you fly home.
